Dialup FAQs
Why are your lines so busy?
Even though we might have unoccupied dial-up lines at our end, you
still get a busy signal. This is because the exchange at NTC is
busy. You should retry after a few minutes or try during the early
morning or late hours. If the problem persists, please contact Customer
Support.
NOTE: if you get a "fast"
busy tone, the exchange is busy. A slower busy tone indicates that
our phone lines are actually busy.
W hy do I get the following error message?
Dial-up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of Network
Protocols you specified in the Network section of Control Panel.
Check your server type settings.
This is because the TCP/IP protocol installed in your computer is
either damaged or is corrupt. You can install a fresh copy of TCP/IP
from your Windows Backup or the Setup Disk. Contact Customer Support
for further help
How do I know when I am connected?
After you are connected, you will see blinking double
windows in the application tray (bottom right corner). Double clicking
on this will display more info on the connection.
Why do I never get connected at the actual speed of my modem?
Even though your modem may be capable of 33.6Kbps & 56Kbps data transfer rate,
sometimes the telephone lines here do not support it. This may be
due to varying weather conditions. If you are calling from outside
Kathmandu, your chances of a high-speed connection are slim.
How do I disconnect?
Double click on the blinking double windows in the
application tray (bottom right corner) and click on Disconnect.
Modem FAQs
What does this error message mean: Computer is not receiving any
response from the modem; check your modem and try again?
This error message means that your computer could not initialize
the modem installed. If it is an external modem, check the cable
and power. If that doesn’t help, turn it off and turn back
on. If you have internal modem, restart your computer and try again.
Why do I get this error message? “There is no dial tone. Make
sure your modem is connected to the phone line properly”.
Probably the phone line you have connected to the modem is not functioning.
Check for dial tone in the phone line and make sure you plug it
in the ‘Line’ socket of the modem.

General Email FAQs
I have an Internet account with HONS. How can I
use that to download mails from my overseas account?
To download mails from your overseas account using
HONS’s connection, configure any Email Client ( e.g.- Outlook
Express, Eudora, The Bat ) to use the POP ( incoming mail ) server
of that overseas provider, SMTP ( outgoing mail ) server of HONS ( smtp.hons.
com.np ) and your username/password for the foreign host.
Can I use my HONS POP account using other ISPs connection?
Yes, you can use your pop account through other ISPs
connection. Make sure the pop server address is that of HONS ( pop3.hons.com.np ).
The other way off accessing your pop account is from our web mail,
i.e. http://mail.hons.com.np. Visit the web address and log in
with your HONS username and password.
While fetching Mails, I get an Error saying that
Remote Server has terminated the connection. Why?
This Problem is generally experienced in Microsoft
Outlook or Outlook Express. We have however managed a mail server
for backward compatibility. The users getting this kind of errors
can put mail.hons.com.np as their POP (Incoming) Mail server.
Why cannot I send Email with more than 50 recipient
Addresses?
This is our attempt to fight against spamming. We
do not allow people to send Mails which have more than 50 recipient
addresses in a single Mail. However we have no restriction on how
many mails you can send.
I am not able to receive mails and the sender gets
a mailer-daemon error messages stating "The user's disk quota
exceeded". What could be the causes for this?
It is requested to the users that they periodically
download all their mails from the server to their Computer. If the
User's Mails occupies more than the predefined quota (disk space
used) value then the server will no longer accept the incoming mails
as you have no space in your mailbox. The default quota is 5MB.If it
happence for long period then server will automatically delete all
mails in your mail box.
I get Mailer-daemon and failure-notice from different
Emails stating that "the mail sent by
you contains Virus"; But I did not send them. How?
This indicates that your computer is probably infected
with virus. Install a newer version of Antivirus, update it and
scan your computer for any virus infection. For future safety also try
not to use any Microsoft Mail Client.
I use Norton Antivirus 2002 and I get the error
message that "Norton antivirus was unable to send your email
message". Why?
Norton Antivirus 2002 or higher has option for scanning
every outgoing email message. Probably, you too have that option
enabled in your computer so try after disabling outgoing mail scan.
How effective is the Incoming & Outgoing email
scanning through Norton Antivirus 2002 or higher?
Yes, the email scanning of Norton Antivirus 2002
or higher works effectively if the virus definition installed is
updated or is latest. It scans every of your incoming and outgoing
emails so that you don’t send or receive virus-infected emails.
I want to be assured that I do not download any
virus infected files or attachments with my emails. What should
I do?
The best way of blocking virus infected files or
attachments are installing the antivirus, e.g. - Norton Antivirus
2002 or higher. If updated regularly with newer virus definitions,
it restricts download of virus infected mails or attachments. However,
if you have already downloaded a file and doubt if that is a virus,
look for the valid extension, e.g. - .txt, .jpg, .html, .PDF etc.
How can I be sure that my email has been sent?
Please check the Sent folder, if you see the copy
of your message which you were intending to send on this folder,
then you can be sure that it is gone. Once the messages are delivered
from your PC, the number in Sent Items box should increase.
